Saturday, May 11 La Ramblas

Today we decided to gear down a notch as the whole week was pretty hectic. Gary even prepared himself to help carry my purchases today :). We headed down to Barcelona's fav tourist hangout La Ramblas. A beautiful tree lined pedestrian thorough-fair in the city core like Granville street on steroids.

I kept a close eye on all the fancy restaurants, bakeries, and tapas bars while Gary kept an eye out for pick picketers. (Amy you would live the cake decoration). There are street performers, street vendors, flower stands, street artist, etc. all wanting your hard earned euros.

La Boqueria is the farmers market located in the middle of La Ramblas. This market would make Granville island look like a fruit stand and the prices are reasonable too, 1 -2 euros for quick bites. You could easily eat your way walking around or pull up a stool at many of the tapas bars where they would cook fresh seafood in front of you while you sip a glass of wine. Watching fish mongers carve up the morning catch and layout for sale is most entertaining. (Other stalls even have skinned fresh rabbits)

Gary loves taking pix of me eyeing the yummy cured hams. If you can't find your ham here, it probably doesn't exist.

After a long afternoon of food gazing (and consumption ) we felt we should do something more cultural and decided to see a musical concert at the famous El Palau de la Musica Catalana. The music hall is considered to have the best example of Modernista interior in Barcelona. We bought ticket solely based on the fact that there was a concert that night believing it would be likely some form of classical music. Some how Gary & I ended up in a concert with a band named Los Ames. (All is well). A Spanish version of ABBA - okay I'm exaggerating a little but the band managed to get Gary & I up from our seats to do a what seem to be a form of a spanish chicken dance.

We got to the concert hall early and had a tour of the interior. The craftsmanship and attention to every detail was out of this world. The space was so grand filled with beautiful and ornate stainglass, frescos, mosaic tiles, marble sculptures, crystal chandeliers and guilding that made us feel like we were royalty. All in all, our evening ended on a lovely positive note.
