Thursday, May 9 Figueres - Salvador Dalí - Afternoon

So here is a little background on Dali

Salvador Dalí May 11, 1904 – January 23, 1989), was a prominent Spanish surrealist painter born in Figueres, Spain.

Dalí was a skilled draftsman, best known for the striking and bizarre images in his surrealist work. His painterly skills are often attributed to the influence of Renaissance masters. His best-known work, The Persistence of Memory, was completed in 1931. Dalí's expansive artistic repertoire included film, sculpture, and photography, in collaboration with a range of artists in a variety of media.

Dalí was highly imaginative, and also enjoyed indulging in unusual and grandiose behavior. His eccentric manner and attention-grabbing public actions sometimes drew more attention than his artwork, to the dismay of those who held his work in high esteem, and to the irritation of his critics

The museum was built by Dali him self, needless to say it was very imaginative, the museum was originally a theater, Dail was buried in the museum, center stage of course

As you enter the building you are in a bazaar courtyard

Strange statues and detail everywhere ( dali had spent some time in the USA during the second world war, hence the strange reference to the Oscars with the gold statues )

Once inside there is an atrium with many art works , the about like may of his works are optical illusions, the one above tha changes from a girl looking out to sea through to a window to a portrait of Abraham Lincoln as soon as you reach a distance of 20 meters

below is one of a very famous paintings call the presistance of the moment , which was to represent the fluid aspect of time and space.

Once inside there were about 10 rooms to visit with many original works. Many of the Tourists were busy taking millions of pictures of the paintings in a strange frenzy to catalogue the entire museum. We went to the gift shop purchased a the official guide book for 10 euros and enjoy each painting after reading the background.

This the outside of the museum, yes just as strange as the inside, the golden dots you see on the walls are loafs of bread.

Well back to Barcelona now!
